Bad Attitudes: Rethinking the Role of Propositional Attitudes in Cognitive Science
نویسنده
چکیده
Mental representation is a central concept in cognitive science. It is the causal story involving “symbolic structures” that form the explanatory schema of classical cognitive science. Objects that populate the particular ontology of a scientific theory must have an instrumental role in explaining the processes in question. As such, it is requisite that the explanatory vehicles within a theory be in some way informative with regards to a particular inquiry. Due to this methodological presupposition, the entities invoked in a theory can be evaluated in terms of their explanatory value or their status as causal-explanatory entities altogether. In pursuing a more explanatory cognitive science, I will be advancing an eliminative program which addresses the need for representational language but questions the status of propositional attitudes as causal objects in computational explanations. Propositional attitudes are sentences consisting of an intensional verb followed by a content clause; for example, “x believes that y.” It is not my aim simply to reiterate Paul Churchland’s claim that folk psychology is an empirical theory (and thus falsifiable). Rather, I will show that (1) propositional attitudes as causal entities are inadequate and largely uninformative for explaining representation computationally; and (2) understanding the dynamics of networks of neurons (though I will rely on artificial models) with relation to representation will require description in non-propositional terms using a dynamic neurobiological model. I will argue that the functional story, which will inform us about how the brain represents, will be

Imputations and Explications: Representational Problems in Treatments of Propositional Attitudes
The representation of propositional attitudes (beliefs, desires, etc.) and the anolysis of natural-language, propositional-attitude reports presents difficult problems for cognitive science and artificial intelligence. In particular, various representational approaches to attitudes involve the incorrect “imputation,” to cognitive agents, of the use of artificial theory-laden notions. Interestin...

The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of attitudes toward reading in relation to cognitive strategies, metacognitive reading strategies, parents' attitudes to reading with reading motivation for students with reading difficulties. The research method was descriptive correlational and in particular structural equation model. For this purpose, the statistical population of t...
متن کاملFormal Semantics for Propositional Attitudes
Contemporary logic is confined to a few paradigmatic attitudes such as belief, knowledge, desire and intention. My purpose is to present a general modeltheoretical semantics of propositional attitudes of any cognitive or volitive mode. In my view, one can recursively define the set of all psychological modes of attitudes. As Descartes anticipated, the two primitive modes are those of belief and...
متن کاملKnowledge and Attitudes of Clinical Teachers, Family Physicians, and Medical Interns towards Giving Bad News, a Study in Jahrom University of Medical Sciences
Introduction: Pronouncing bad news is one of the most difficult duties of a physician. Lack of education in this field may negatively affect physician-patient relationship. These skills are not taught in our country vastly and effectively. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge and attitude of clinical teachers, family physicians and interns of Jahrom University of Medical Science about ...
متن کاملMeasurement-Theoretic Accounts of Propositional Attitudes
In the late 1970s and early 1980s a number of philosophers, notably Churchland, Field, Stalnaker, Dennett, and Davidson, began to argue that propositional attitude predicates (such as believes that it’s sunny outside) are a species of measure predicate, analogous in important ways to numerical predicates by which we attribute physical magnitudes (such as mass, length, and temperature). Other ph...
